French Canadian Culture - question about Quebec's culture

Expert: Josee - 5/11/2003

Question
Hi Josee,

Im a first year student at Simon Fraser University in B.C. Im currently doing a reasearch for a paper on the cultural ties/bonds that have played a role in creating Quebec as a distinctive culture area/region. Ties or bonds would include kinship, tradition, religion, language and political. The paper has to be within a specific time frame and not a general all inclusive time frame from 1600's to present. I was wondering if you could recommend any specific resources or historical events that would point me in the right direction.

Thank you so very much for your time

Kyle

Answer
Hi Kyle!

How are you?  Thanks for writting.

There are plenty of events that could be on interests.  I will give you some in different frame of time.

1763 and the years that followed

When Canada was given by threaty to Great-Britain, everything resulting from that was probably what created strong bonds between the French living here.  The laws we were able to keep and with the help of the church, we were able to keep our languages and our culture.  That goes thru the 19th century too.  If you can find some book on the Conquest and it's consequences, that would be very good.

1837-1838

The Patriots.  These were men that, for political and cultural reasons, fought against the British governement during these years.  They mean alot to us and in fact, the very first Patriot day will be held on May 19, the same day as the Queen Victoria Day.  The letters of one of them, Chevalier de Lorimier, were published so maybe you can learn about it there.

La Révolution Tranquille

This is the period in the 1960s where the biggest reforms were made in our society, concerning everything you can possibly think about:  education, health, finances, everything.  This period and these reforms made the Québec we have today.  During this period of time, you also have the famous quote from General De Gaulle, "Vive le Québec libre!".

Meech Lake and Charlottetown

Especially the failure of Meech, which made that alot of people in Québec realized how different we are and that we are a Nation.

These are only hints.  All these events have helped created ties and bonds in their own ways.  If you need more details on 1 or more of these events, don't hesitate to write, maybe I could help you...

BTW, sorry for my mistakes in english!  I hope you can understand me well.

Josee
