AboutFiona Expertise I can help beginning and intermediate musicians improve their knowledge and skill in playing the French horn. I can answer questions about fingerings, embouchures, and playing techniques. I can also help answer questions about music theory, which is a common aspect of many grade school and high school music classes. I can answer questions about counting rhythms and reading music and I have extensive knowledge of all musical markings and dynamics and the most effective way to achieve said markings with the French horn.If you have questions about whether or not the horn is a good instrument to switch over to from another I can help you along with questions on that topic as well. I can not answer questions regarding any other instrument.
Experience I have been playing the French horn for over 15 years. I have also been giving lessons to elementary, middle school, and high school students for about 6 years. I have played in many bands and ensembles and I currently play with the band and orchestra at my college.
Organizations Currently I am a member of the St. Olaf College marching band, concert band, and orchestra.
Education/Credentials Although I have no degrees in music, I have been taking music courses since I was in high school and have continued to play well into college. I have played with some of the best musicians in the country and have been taught by French horn players from the Cleveland Orchestra and Julliard’s division of music.
Awards and Honors I am the first chair horn player in both the St. Olaf College concert band and orchestra.
Question I'm having trouble identifying a horn. A friend of mine ended up with several instruments, including an old Buescher Horn (made in Elkhart, Indiana). Could you tell me what sort of horn this is, and if it is any good?
I've been looking for information about Buescher instruments, but it has been hard to find anything other than trumpets and saxophones.
Thanks!
Answer Marci,
I have been looking for information about Buescher Horns for the past 2 hours! And like yourself, I haven't really found much.I did find one Buescher horn on Ebay. It had a smashed bell so it was only going for about 10 dollars. I don't really know if that will help you considering that this horn was severely damaged. As for tone, I really can't tell you. There are a lot of factors to consider when trying assess tone. Is it a double or a single horn? What is the condition of the horn? What is the horn made of? I would love to give you more information if I could but I don't really know much about antique horns or the Buescher brand for that matter! Perhaps you could ask a local music store what they know or even an antiques dealer who knows about instruments. Hope your search goes well! Feel free to ask a follow up with more details about the instrument itself and I will see if I can't ask a few of my music connections about the horn!
