Question
QUESTION: hi/bonjour,

can you please translate the following to french:

self-aware
self-awareness
always self-aware
i am self-aware
introspective
introspection
always introspective
know thyself

thank you/merci
k

ANSWER: Hello Kristine

self-aware = conscient de soi, se connaître soi-même
self-awareness = la conscience de soi (there is no word equivalent to this.
se connaître soi-même is closer to the English word than conscience de soi). It depends
of course on the sentence

always self-aware = je suis toujours conscient de ce que je suis.
i am self-aware = je me connais bien

introspective = introspectif
introspection = introspection
always introspective = toujours dans l'introspection
know thyself = connaissez vous vous-même

I hope this helps

Cheers

QUESTION: Caro,

thank you so much. very helpful.  great review coming your way.

to put it in context, i'm looking for a tattoo of "self-aware" or something similiar in french.  i like se connaître soi-même.

can these words also mean or be similiar to "self-conscious" because i would not want that

so if i was to put "self-aware" as a tattoo in french it would be
se connaître soi-même ?

thanks again caro.
ks

Answer
Hi Kristine,

I'm glad that my answer helps.
For a tatoo, you have two options:
- Connais-toi toi-même (know thyself). It is the translation of the greek
precept uttered by Socrates. It is a key word of the humanist movement.

- or the infinitive form : se connaître soi-même

I hope this helps

Cheers
