Expertise
I can answer some questions regarding freshwater fish ranging from their care to diagnosing common diseases or problems with the fish. I can also answer questions regarding the care and maintenance of an aquarium. I haven't had much luck with live plants, so can't help in that area very much. Not real good with explaining salt water or brackish set ups too well either. Also regarding goldfish, I have some comets, and have a little experience with them but mostly just general info on them. I AM NOT THAT FAMILIAR WITH ANY OF THE FANCY VARIETIES OF GOLDFISH. YOU MIGHT BE BETTER DIRECTING THOSE QUERIES TO AN EXPERT MORE FAMILIAR WITH THEM. If I can't answer or don't know something, I'll let you know, so don't be upset if I reject your question, I'll always explain why. I would just rather not answer then give an answer I'm not confident about.

Experience
All personal, first hand, general fishkeeping experience. I've had fresh water aquariums now for about 7 years. I've had tropical/community fish tanks, African cichlids, South American cichlids, brackish water puffer fish, and a lot of other varieties in between.

Education/Credentials
None, all personal experience

thanks vicky e uk

ANSWER: Hi Vicky
Well, I can't say for sure what happened with the other expert, but my guess is this, when we get a question and for some reason or other we can't answer it, we have a list of "auto rejections" that we can pick from.  One of the options is to send the question to our "question pool" for other experts to try to answer, which is a common selection we do use.  And, right above that, is the "this is a homework question".  So, I'm guessing she was probably trying to send it to the question pool, and accidentally hit the wrong one.  And once it's clicked, it's gone from our screen so there's nothing we can do to correct it.  I could be wrong though.....

Anyway, to answer your questions.....

Female livebearers including guppies, will usually drop the fry every 28 days. This isn't an exact science though, and it may be a few days sooner or later then that.

How do you have them separated?  If it's a separate tank, that's fine.  If it's one of those small "breeding nets" that hang on the side of the tank or float in the tank, that's not good.  Those will actually stress them out more so, and can cause them to lose the fry.  If that's the case, I would let them back into the main tank and just keep an eye out for the fry and move them as necessary.

Hope that helps and let me know if you have more questions.

Christy

QUESTION: thanks for answering,i had her in the plastic trap, but she had only 1 fry, she has now been put in the main tank, but she still looks pregnant and is not swimming around like she used to.my other guppy had 8 fry and they are doing well.
would be grateful if you could help
thanks vicky

Answer
Hi Vicky
Looks like either one of two things happened.
1.  She could've eaten all the other fry-which they will commonly do.  That could explain why she looks fat still and is acting sluggish.

2.  Or, some kind of complication happened, and only the one came out and the other's are "stuck" so to say.

In either situation, there's really nothing you can.  Try feeding her the inside of a pea-all the fish will benefit fromt his.
If it's the second one, just hope that she can reabsorb the fry.  Might be best to separate her in a separate tank if you have one available.  That'll keep her from being harassed by the other fish.  I wouldn't keep her in the plastic trap, like I said before, those can be stressful to the fish.

Good luck!

Christy
