About Michael Freynet
Expertise
I can answer most questions on freshwater aquariums involving the biological cycle, live plants, fish compatibility, stocking quantity, feeding, filtration, aeration, water chemistry, and cleaning. I am still learning about some certain diseases and parasites but am more than willing to research any questions that I do not know.

Experience
I have owned multiple freshwater fish tanks over the years. I also help maintain other people’s freshwater fish tanks. I am currently a college student at Minnesota State University Moorhead for a major in Biology and a minor in Zoology. I'm also currently employed at Petco.

Freshwater Aquarium - R/O water and minerals...

Expert: Michael Freynet - 11/6/2009

Question
Hi there. I normally would use reverse osmosis water  for my pet betta.  Recently I have read from a few experts out there that I should use only treated tap because R/O water is missing the minerals my fishie girl needs. Ok, well there is definitely something wrong with the tap water here in my apt. building if not in all of San Diego, I don't know, but I tested it for ammonia, and my test strips all turned GREEN...bad...obviously, I don't want her in THAT!  Can I use a mineral supplement to supply the lost minerals?  I went to Petco today and they have this product called
KENT Marine Essential Elements, essential trace mineral supplement for reef and fish...
I am nervous because it is for marine aquariums, and I have a betta...freshwater...I am desperate for good advice...ThankYou!

Answer
Hi Liane,
I really believe there shouldn't be anything wrong with your R/O water that would have any bad effects on your Betta. Keep in mind you it doesn't hurt to still condition your water with products like aquasafe even if it is R/O. I don't think id use that Marine essential product as it is for marine water and although that may not hurt your fish I just don't think its worth your money. You can always try using some API aquarium salt. As the recommended dose is 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons just use like a quarter teaspoon of aquarium salt after each water change. That will help put in electrolytes into your water that has many good benefits for any fish.
