Question
Hi Karen,
A month ago my firend gave me his Venus cichlid since it got too aggressive (1.5 inches big). I have kept him in my malawi tank. He seems fine but i want to know more about him.(i am not sure whether he is a male or female, how do you differenciate?) Will A pair of Discuss (8 month old) thrive in a 25-30 gallon tank?

......srinivas

Answer
Hello Srinivas,

I'm guessing your 'Venus' cichlid is what we call Venustus cichlid around here... These beautiful but very aggressive fish grow to a maximum size of about 10" inches. They are relatively easy to keep but they are aggressive predators known to hunt small cichlids in the wild and their territorial nature makes it a gamble when it comes to keeping him with other fish. It is difficult to say which species will be able to live with the Venustus as this is based on tanksize, stocking levels, and there is even variability in temperaments of individuals.

Venustus cichlids are a gorgeous but large Malawi cichlid, The male is beautiful when in Spawning coloration. His blotches dissapear and the body turns a blue color, with an overall yellow shading and a metallic blue face.

Only a pair discus should do just fine in a 25-30 gallon provided that you are very consistant and keen on water changes (30-percent water changes three times per week is standard) Discus MUST have clean water and their water must be kept very warm (82-85 F) These two elements are essential to have healthy fish and if you keep up to these, your Discus will thrive.

I hope this helps...... Good luck on all your fish!

Happy fishkeeping!
Karen~
