AboutKaren Fields Expertise I own and maintain a large number of tanks with many various tropical fish species. During my fishkeeping past I have learned a lot of the myths and truths about tropical fish care. Currently I keep a wide range of species and have a lot of experience in; Severum cichlids, gouramis, platies, goldfish, bettas, tetras, paradise fish, Angelfish, Corydoras catfish, and many others as well as a couple of years with brackish water.
If you have a question on tropical fish keeping I`ll be sure to answer it in the simplest way I can, and if I don`t know the answer, I`ll research the answer for you.

Question I would rather not get rid of such an interesting fish. What would be the minimum tank size you recomend for him?

I have just recently aquired a wolf fish and found your article very helpful. He is curently being housed in a 75 gallon cichlid tank. I'm curious as to the speed of their growth, because if he gets as big as you say i'm afraid of what may happen to the other fish, although many of them are quite agressive themselves. Any help is greatly appreciated thanks.

Dear Stephen,
If given a fairly large aquarium like yours. Wolffish will grow quite large and be very predatory. I wouldn't trust him with your other fish. Wolffish have a tendancy to want to chew on anything they can reach even larger cichlids for example. I just wouldn't trust them. Your aquarium may certainly become too small for a wolffish and other fish to get out of each-others way and live peacefully. You may be best (although I don't like to say it) by returning your wolffish before something bad happens.
Wolves grow very fast as long as they are fed well and the water quality is very good. The norm is mostly about 1 inch per month.
I really hope this helps and I wish you only the best!!!

Answer Hello Again!!
I hope you do not mean Wolf Cichlid and not just Wolf fish.
Wolf fish in general will need at the minimum of 75 gallons and the larger species should ideally have 125gallons. I agree they are very awesome predatory fish but need lots of special care and a very large aquarium. If you can commit to one, that's wonderful!
