Fruit - Banana Trees & Tropical Plants

Question
Here in Alabama, I have a Banana Tree with green leaves, and several tropical plants that I have in pots by my fish ponds.  I was wondering whether I can plants these plants outdoors instead of bringing them inside.  I don't have much room in the house because my son and his family are living with us right now.  It's starting to get cold & I really don't know what to do. I have a one car garage but it is not enclosed.  What can I do?  I planted the Banana tree by the pond, cut it down and put hay around and over the plant.  Is this ok?  Thanks, Rita

Answer
Hi Rita, I need to know how cold it gets where you are, Alabama is a big state with several climate zones, do you get a freeze during your Winter? if so, they can't stay out and need to be brought in (I am assuming they are cold sensitive plants, but you didn't give me the types...). The Banana will be fine cut back like that, but if the ground freezes, it may well not make it either. If the ground doesn't freeze, then the Banana will send up new growth when the Spring arrives. Nick
