Fruit - honeybell tree losing all it leaves

Expert: Nick McCann - 10/17/2009

Question
QUESTION: Nick,
I live in southwest Florida and I have a honeybell tree that is not fruit baring yet. All of a sudden I noticed all the leave were turning yellow. I see no fungus on the tree or bugs. Now all the leaves have started to fall off. Is there anything I can do? Thanks Josh

ANSWER: Hi Josh, there is numerous causes for this, what I need you to do is give me a synopsis of the care it has been given over the past year and a history of its production the last couple of years; Honeybells are notorious for giving fruit one year and next to nothing the next. The leaf shed though could be one of many reason. Nick

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: It has never produced fruit. It is only about 4 feet high and I have had it for four years. I have never really put too much care into it except fertilizing every couple months. About two weeks ago I noticed the leaves were yellow/greenish so I decided to fertilize. Now when I went out today it has lost alot of leaves. I do not think it is from over watering since it hasn't really rained much. Hope that helps more.

Answer
Hi Josh, Ok, it is really stunted for its age, sounds like it needs to be cared for with a "Citrus 101' crash course here; Citrus needs to be fertilized 3 times a year with a well balanced "Citrus fertilizer", it needs to sprayed once a month (during the Spring, Summer and Fall) with a Horticultural Oil for insect control (even though you don't see them, they are there doing their damage..), sprayed once every 3 months with a Copper fungicide for Fungal problems (which I suspect it is suffering from now...) and the ground beneath it (from the drip line in..) needs to be completely free of weeds or mulch or any cover at all. HoneyBells need cross pollination from certain other Citrus also, and if there are none present within a quarter mile, there will never be any fruit production; but first you need to get the health of the tree under control. Nick
