Fuchsias - fuchsia basket winterization/death

Expert: William McMahon - 10/12/2009

Question
I have a fuchsia basket that got fried in the heat this summer. I watered it and basically just left it alone. I was going to throw it out because it was dead and brown but when I went out to get it I saw green leaves emerging from some of the dead branches. I left it alone but I have been checking the soil to make sure it doesn't dry out just in case the plant might be making a come back. I brought it inside tonight because the temperatures have been getting colder and I am not sure what to do with it now. Could it be coming back or should I just toss it out? If it is trying to come back what do I do with it for the winter? I have heard about cutting it back but don't know how to do that. When do I water and fertilize it? I am new to plant ownership and Lowe's couldn't tell me anything. Thank you.

Answer
Hello Ryanne,Your fuchsia is coming back into life, they do this sometimes after they have had a severe check. Unless you have a place indoors which is bright and keeps above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, it would be best to put it into store for the winter. To store your basket, it needs to be cut back to about five inches above the soil level all over. Also all leaves must be removed.Don't feed your plant, only give a little water throughout the winter when the soil feels dry. If you have any fleece type of material, cover your plant, it will help your plant through the winter. After the winter has gone and all dangers of frost has gone, you can put your plant outdoors and it will come back into growth. I hope this helps, if you require further information, please get in touch. Kind regards William.
