Subject: going back to school
Question I am a 32 year old mother of 2 and i am wanting to go back to school . i currently have about forty credits from community college. my husband is also active duty in the army . I was wondering what would be the best way to finance me going back to school. and if there are any resources for military dependents?
Answer Dear Lynne,
My father was career Air Force so I personally know there are resources available for military dependents.
I looked on the internet and found a page that has some helpful information for you to research further. The page is located at:
http://www.finaid.org/military/veterans.phtml You'll notice the information is for both active duty and veterans.
In addition, prior to applying to colleges I would take the next steps:
a. Visit http://www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov/ to find out how much financial aid you are eligible to receive from the federal government.
b. Find a EFC calculator to find out how much your family will be required to contribute to your college goal.
c. Research colleges to determine which one will take more or all of your college credits.
d. Ask questions of the schools you are considering to find out their policy for funding need - do they fund all the need you have or a percentage of it? How much of it will be in the form of scholarships and grants, versus loans?
I wish you much success.
