Subject: Bogus direct mail solicitations

Question
We have received phone and mail solicitations from different organizations.  How can I find out if they are truly benefiting the groups they say they benefit?  The current one is California Organization of Police & Sheriffs.  Is there a respected web site that screens the good from the bad and ugly?
Thank you,
Neil

Answer
Start with charitynavigator.org and the links associated with it.  Also, call your police chief and sheriff.  One special point:  often these police and sheriff organizations are not the kind that the IRS allows you to deduct your support.  I would beware of them.
