Subject: moving a headstone
Question I am trying to move my mother-in-law from KY to OK. Her remains are inside the headstone. What do we need to know about getting her here? Can we go and get her? Does this require a special person to transport her? How much could this cost us. The cemetery could not give us an answer.
Answer There is no reason you couldn't move her if you're physically able to do so. I wouldn't even mention that the remains are in the headstone the next time you bring it up. Simply say that you want to make an appointment to get the headstone. You'll need some muscles, I'm sure. Is it so large that you would need a crane to load it in the trunk of a car or into a pick-up truck?
Or do you simply want to remove the cremated remains and leave the stone where it is? I have no idea how to open such a monument. You might find out from a monument dealer, then get the wrench you need and remove it after hours if the cemetery balks.
If you act like you have a right to do this, which I'm sure you do, then don't let the cemetery pull any mischief.
