GMC Repair - 2003 Sierra 2500 Front Wheels "Scrubbing"

Expert: Tim hagan - 8/12/2009

Question
Hello,

I recently purchased a used 2003 GMC Sierra 2500 regular cab 4x4 (~53K miles).  I have noticed that the front wheels really scrub hard when turning in the driveway or other tight space.  The push button selector indicates the vehicle is in 2H.  The tires show excessive wear on the outer edges.  My prior experience experience is with a 4x4 with manual hubs that would scrub slightly only if the hubs were locked but the transfer case was in 2H.  Do the front wheels free-wheel on the Sierra when in 2H?

Thanks.

Answer
they should yes, if you feel like it is binding excessively i would first check to make sure that it is not stuck in 4 wheel drive, secondly, i would check the service records, it is possible to install the center link upside down, which will cause it to feel like it is in 4 wheel drive on slow turns
