Question i was wondering what peter Gabriel has done towards humanitarian rights and where i can find more about his work towards peace.
Answer Peter Gabriel has worked for human rights for over 20 years. He wrote the song "Biko", about murdered South African activist Stephen Biko, for PG3 (sometimes referred to as "Melt"), which was released in 1980. He worked with Amnesty International throughout the 80s, providing a driving force behind worldwide tours in 1986 and 1988 (with other musicians including Sting and Bruce Springsteen).
In addition, in 1992 he founded Witness, an organization dedicated to putting cameras and other recording and communication devices in the hands of people who see or experience human rights abuses. Here is a quote from their website:
WITNESS was founded in 1992 by musician and activist Peter Gabriel and the Reebok Human Rights Foundation as a project of the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights (now Human Rights First). In 1988, Peter was part of Amnesty International’s Human Rights Now! Tour. He was struck by the stories he heard from survivors of human rights abuses and the lack of attention these stories received. Peter had brought along one of the first camcorder models and realized the potential of video as a tool against abuse; he noted that perpetrators of abuses were often brought to justice when photographic or video evidence of abuses existed.
For the past year or two, Peter has been focused on developing a Witness video hub similar to YouTube, so that people around the world can upload footage and/or view it easily. He has been attending financial and political summits (such as last month's Davos conference) in an attempt to raise awareness and badly needed funds, as well as technical prowess needed to complete the project.
