Expert: Robert Medl Date: 2/25/2008 Subject: slot machine tilt
Question The Double Jackpot Diamond Line slot machine I was playing in Louisiana the weekend hit a progressive pay jackpot!! Approx. 1mn. past when the machines wheels started spinning again. They stopped and started a 2nd time, but this time immediately. At first I was told that the cameras would have to be checked to verify my hit. Then they opened the machine and said no tilt was registered. Awhile passed and I was told in the main computer they had yet to find a tilt. Eventually they returned to say that it was a tilt which was found and a Jackpot had not registered. I was initially told that this machine didnt tilt in this manner, for such a long period of time before resuming the spins. I was also told that even the vibration from the other machines behind mine could have caused the tilt due to miss alignment of door sensors. I explained that i along with 3 other people had been playing this mach. for over the last hr. without any problems. Still i wasnt allowed the Jackpot even with strangers for witnesses who saw it stopped for that minute. I filed a complaint with the game board and they shut the machine down. Long story I know. Sorry. What do you think will Happen now? Does any of this make sense to you? Thanks,Virgin slot player.
Answer Hi there,
First of all, I am sorry that it is not immediately clear that your progressive pay jackpot was a valid one. I can only imagine your frustration at playing this game, having the jackpot apparently hit, and then not getting paid (at least not immediately).
From what you have written, filing a complaint with the LOUISIANA GAMING CONTROL BOARD (http://www.dps.state.la.us/lgcb/) sounds like a good first step. As for their process and what happens next, I suspect that Board will ask for computer records from the gaming establishment as well as (possibly) camera images. I would also imagine that they will want to talk to you again to ask you clarifying questions about the written report that I assume that you filed with them when you made your initial complaint. A decision will then be issued after all facts are collected by them, a process that I suspect will take weeks if not longer.
It is my opinion that the decision of the gaming establishment will stand and that you will not get paid for the jackpot. My reasoning is that they know that a player that thinks they have hit the jackpot will file a complaint with the board; so, unless they have clear evidence of a malfunction, they know they will get busted and have to pay up plus a fine plus all the bad publicity... so they may as well pay up and get the good publicity by publicizing your win. Since they did not immediately pay up, I have to think that they have clear evidence of a malfunction.
I really am sorry this happened to you. Keep me posted on how things progress.
