Question Mr. Glazer, I read your column in the Card Player and enjoy your insight to the game of poker. I am a retired 64 year old male and play low limit ($1.00-5.00 stud, $2.00-4.00 & $3.00-6.00 Hold'em)
I have been messing around with a novel involving poker for a couple of years, but, lately I have thought about writing a book on the daily experiences of a low limit player, anecdotes, etc. I have been keeping notes of my sessions for the past two years, (since we moved to the Gulf Coast of Mississippi) and I play approximatley 3 times a week. I use Stat King to keep track of my play. My question, finally, do you believe there is a market for this type of book?
Thank You,
Bill Williams
P.S. Just finished your "The Battle Poker's Future". Congratulations on getting to the final table.
Answer Hi Bill,
I wish I could give you a better answer, but this one, like most poker questions, is a whopping "it depends." I could envision people loving a book like this, and also people hating a book like this. As we say in the writing trade, "ideas are easy, execution is hard." If you are a great writer with interesting insights into both poker and the effect it has on the human condition, I'm sure you will find a willing audience for your book. If you are an average writer and the stories you tell would not hold an audience spellbound if you told them at a party of poker players, you probably won't have a market for your book. In general, "my poker experiences" books by previously unpublished writers wind up being self-published and selling very few copies, unless there is either brilliant writing or excellent information about how to play poker in them.
My best advice is probably to try writing a few articles for the various gambling publications and see if they have any interest. If you can get through that door, the next one will be much easier. I suggest you send completed articles, not descriptions of what you would write, and also suggest that you look at the publications and see what kind (length, etc.) of articles they tend to run.
