do you know which show is on record as being the show to have paid out the highest overall winnings in its history?

Answer
That would be Sale of the Century in 1987.

Contestant Tom O'Brien won all 11 games he played in, winning 10 prizes off the board plus a $50,000 bonus for winning an 11th consecutive game.

That plus over $20,000 in winnings in Tournament of Champions play gave O'Brien a grand total of over $173,000 in cash and prizes.
