AboutMiranda Expertise I can answer most questions pertaining to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis) as well as the medications, surgeries and tests associated with it. I am not a doctor so please don't ask questions that aren't related to this specific area or close to it because it is not my area of expertise.
Experience I have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease for over five years and have dealt with the disease since I was twelve years old. I have been through every medication, numerous exams as well as surgery. I have also worked at a camp for chronically ill children the past three summers and two of our sessions are Crohn's and Colitis so I am very familiar with both conditions.

Question Hi. My partner has just gone to hospital (for the first time since having been diagnosed with Crohns 8 months ago). He's been constipated for a week and couldn't do the MRI due to all the liquids he's have to take. Does this mean he needs surgery, or is a medical treatment enough?
THanks in advance
Answer Constipation doesnt necessarily mean surgery. Generally speaking people with crohns can go from diarriah to constipation and dont require surgical treatments. The docs may encourage some sort of laxative so that things in his gut can get going and move on down. If it is really bad and he becomes obstructed they may admit him, and administer IV fluids, and have him on a clear liquid diet or something similar to settle things down.
