Question
hello dr. melamed, can i take senna indefinitely for regularity? thanks.

Answer
Dear Dewitt!

Senna is the laxative herb that irritates colon wall and causes peristaltic movement. It is useful for occasional use. Taking Senna regularly may cause habitual constipation when colon does not work without stimulation. I use Senna in an herbal formula with the combination of the other herbs for the healing and cleansing purposes.

However, chronic constipation can cause many symptoms, which are very far from the colon. Persons with chronic constipation are in risk of the diverticulosis and colorectal cancer. Do not kill the messenger.

Having constipation may be the sign of numerous health problems. Sadly, this neglected disorder typically is treated symptomatically by laxatives like senna. The best way is to understand the reasons for chronic constipation to focus on the root of the problem.

Some reasons for your constipation can be:
Candida-yeast overgrow. It is possible after antibiotics, drinking chlorinated water. Constipation/diarrhea may also be symptoms of it.
   Celiac disease, food  allergy, sensitivity
Little amount of the friendly intestinal bacteria
Pancreatic deficiency Gas, bloating, left upper abdominal pain
Low amount of the bile. Bile constipation is in people that avoid fatty foods or have the acidic bile. Bile is natural simulator of the intestinal peristaltic
   Not enough magnesium, potassium
Not enough fiber in the diet
   Dehydration
Low thyroid function. Some areas in the USA where have water supply has the low amount of iodine. Temperature test may show that
Depression. Combination of constipation and depression is well-known medical fact
   Sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise,
   Some medications
Changes in life or routine such as travel
Ignoring the urge to go to the bathroom.

It will be unprofessional to give you advise without knowing your age, lifestyle, eating habits, medications, and medical date. If you like to go deeply in your situation, I may help.http://www.biotherapy-clinic.com/phone-consultations.html

Have good health.
