About Adriaan Pretorius
Expertise
Any questions on how to come out, handling people close to you, handling the pressures of being gay in society, going out, seeking a partner, etc. are welcome. I live in South Africa and may have a unique perspective on gay live, as gays do not live openly and have been scorned for a long time here. If you need to speak to someone, and no one wants to listen, I will try my best to be a friend when you have none.

Experience
I am a gay male who have lived the life as someone that had to hide it from everyone for a long time until coming out some years back. I know how it feels to be 'in' and 'out' and have had diverse experiences in relationships. I have had friends who hated gay life, gay bashers, friends who understood me.

Education/Credentials
I have a postgraduate degree in Science. I have worked together with and currently work with homosexual and heterosexuals in my environment.

Question
Can you get aids if someone was rubbing there tissue that had blood on it.I am really nervous

Answer
Hi Noel

It is possible to get infected by contact with contaminated blood, but there are a bunch of rules.  The blood must be quite fresh, old dead blood will only have old dead virusses.  The blood must somehow get inside you.  This can happen with open cuts or wounds on your skin where the blood must rub against, or on your mouth (if you wipe your mouth with the blood on the tissue).  The HI Virus doesn't live that long outside a body, mere minutes.  You cannot get AIDS from kissing or hugging, the virus lives in blood, so unless you had blood in your saliva, and was eating the tissue with the blood and the blood was only minutes old, you can relax :-)

If you want to, you can test yourself after about 6 months, that is when the virus can be detected inside.  The test is anonymous ,mostly free at doctors and hospitals and you have an answer in a day.
