Question
I am trying to figure out where my Darroch family originated---I can presently trace Hugh Darroch and Martha Osbourn to Barony-they had Richard Darroch-and family in the Govan area around 1840.  I have contacted the titled Darroch's of Gourock who originated from Isley and Jura--but Mal Darroch found no similarity to our mutual history aside from name.  I am stumped here at 1840--any input would be appreciated.

Answer
Hello Elizabeth,

I have located a Hugh Darroch aged 32 years with son Richard aged 6 years in the 1851 census for Govan (with sisters Margaret 10 and Mary 8). However his wife is given as Frances and not Martha. I have located the marriage between Hugh Darroch and Martha Osbourn in December 1840 in Glasgow. I cannot find the family in the 1841 census for Glasgow but that could be due to errors in transcriptions in the census indexing as these we were undertaken abroad and we are missing lots of families due to this. I need to know when the family emigrated and to consult the 1840 marriage entry unless you have this already. It is necessary to establish your own ancestry before ascertaining if you are related to other Darroch families. It is possible that Martha died prior to the 1851 census and Hugh remarried as he had very small children. If you want to discuss this further email me directly on charlotte@dmains.co.uk
