Question I read where Jefferson had Negro blood in his lineage. Is this true?
Answer Fred,
Whatever expert knowledge I may have in the realm of genealogy is strictly limited to how to connect oneself to an original Dawes Roll enrollee in NE Oklahoma and miscellaneous advice regarding registration in the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.
I am no genealogist at all.
However, your question is easy for even myself and so why not.
I am a teacher. I assume this to be an honest question.
Three points can be made here.......
1) All Homo sapiens have an ultimate African ancestry including perhaps yourself which dates to between 60,000 and 100,000 years ago. Thanks to mitochondrial DNA, we know that those humans that left Africa, radiated out and gradually lost their Negroid features due to selective pressures and localized adaptation. Therefore, if you go back far enough, yes, Thomas Jefferson has African ancestry as do we all.
2) I have recently heard that some of Jefferson's ancestry is Phoenician which would be a kind of Greek/Arab mix.
3) What you are likely referring to with your question is not that of his ancestry, but rather that of his progeny. Yes, it is well documented that Jefferson had children with one of his African slaves by the name of "Sally". I believe that there is a society today that meets yearly to celebrate their link to this famous American. Some of those who today bear the name "Jefferson" are in fact descendants of this interracial union.
