Question QUESTION: Hi. I am trying to find out more about John Miles, from J. Miles & Co., Ltd., printers, London. The company was on 68-70 Wardour St. in London in the early 1900s. I am trying to find out anything I can about John Miles, his company, and any kind of relationship he may have had with D. W. Griffith or his brother, Albert. Anything at all you can tell me about John Miles personally, or his company, or any connection to David Wark Griffith or brothee Albert L. Grey will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.
ANSWER: I need more information on John Miles in order to answer this question. There are over 600 in the 1901 census and over 100 in London alone. I need this if you are looking for a family connection. If so please send me more information.
If however, you are looking for a business connection, I am sorry I cannot help you.

QUESTION: If I can find out more about the family of John Miles, that would be great. I do not know anything more about John Miles, but would it help when looking through the 1901 Census records if you had his occupation? As I said, he is listed as a Printer, a Publisher, even a Colourist Printer. He owned a company, J. Miles & Co. Does that help at all? And, that company was in business in the latter part of the 1800s into the mid 1900s, so in 1901 maybe he was in his 30s or 40s or even 50s. Does that help at all? And like I said, his business was basically on Wardour St., that is in Westminster. Does that help?
Answer There are still several John Miles. The first was born circa 1835 and is listed as a publisher and bookseller. Born in London he was married to an Ellen (born circa 1836). He is still around in the 1901 census. Haven't found any family for him.
There is a John Harley Miles born Sept-Dec 1855 son of John and Mary A. Miles a toilet soap maker. This John H. married Frances Taylor who was born in Ireland. He is listed as printer compositor in the 1901 census.
These are the two most promising and neither has a connection to the Griffith family. When you look up D W Griffith's family, the children are all born in Kentucky and the father in Virginia. D W also married a Linda Arvidson and Evelyn Baldwin - neither of which seems to relate to the Miles family.
If you look at the company J. Miles, they printed a lot of theater postcards and other artwork. Perhaps it is just a business relationship.
