Question
What did Martin Luther King mean by, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" ?

Answer
Hi Kayla:

Okay, I have taught for so many years that it is not difficult to discern that this is a homework question, further, I would suggest that you are probably in junior high school.  However, I don't want to send you the standard response because I admire the fact that you have the initiative to research the proper response.  Good for you!So I will give you some hints but you must do the follow-up: fair enough?

The quotation to which you refer is part of of MLK's "Letters from Birmingham Jail" which emanate from his imprisonment as a result in his belief in non-violent protest.  If you research his protests you should use the date - April 1963 - and the reference to these letters.  One good source is Michigan State University's 2008 MLK research topic - this is precisely what you need.  Just enter it into your search engine.  But I would really like to hear from you about YOUR opinions regarding this quote.  THINK about it:  what does this mean to you?  It's very simple to parrot what someone else has to say but to make it really relevant (and this, I believe, is what MLK intended) you must apply this to how YOU view the country and the world. The way to do that is to learn all you can about the issue, form an opinion, and to be prepared to defend your point of view. It may take some time and effort but it will be worth it.  That is the earmark of a truly educated individual.  After you have done this, will you let me know your conclusions?  I would be very interested in hearing your conclusions.  Good luck to you!
