General History - prehistory

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 1/11/2009

Question
QUESTION: We originally comes from Africa.  History is divided into prehistory, early history, modern history, and finally future history.  Early history and modern history usually belongs to China.  In term of prehistory, what continents and better yet what regions of the globe or world: West Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia, North America, South America, Africa, Eruope.  Among these regions, which regions has the most advanced or most powerful civilizations or empires and perhap anything you want to call in the world.  In other word, in pre-history which regions is the most powerful or most respected part of the world.

ANSWER: Indeed we all do come from Africa! All genetic (including nuclear DNA, specific Y-chromosome & X-chromosome DNA and mitochondrial DNA) and archaeological studies indicate that. But that was a LONG time ago (the exodus out of Africa happened around 60000 years ago) long before any real civilization. The first more advanced cultures were along some rivers. The Sumerians along Euphrates and Tigris in Mesopotamia (present day Iraq) - Asia, the Egyptians along the Nile in Egypt - Africa, and somewhat later the Indus culture along the Indus in India (present day Pakistan) - Asia and even a little later the first Chinese culture along the Yellow River (Huang Ho) in China - Asia.  The reason for this was that agriculture was easier along rivers. So the earliest advanced civilizations were all - except Egypt in Africa - in Asia. However other cultures in Europe (Crete) and in America (Olmecs in Mexico and others in Peru) were not far behind. History can not really exist without writing (before that it is prehistory) and writing first appears in Mesopotamia and Egypt around 5000 years ago or maybe a little earlier. However some old writings like Linear A of Crete and that of the Indus culture can still not be read!

QUESTION: What do we respect more: prehistory or history because prehistory date back to Paleolithic time and the time spans is very far as to history?  For example, this websites: http://everything2.com/e2node/Vietnamese%2520History.  as you can see Vietnam history consist of pre-history such Son vi Culture.  As a comparison of that to Roman Empire is the Vietnam prehistory culture more impressive then the Roman Empire?

Answer
It is like comparing apples & pears. With prehistory you have NO writing or if there is any you can NOT read it! With history you have readable writing. So they are NOT comparable! Roman Empire history is based on so much writing that during certain periods for example at the time of Julius Caesar we can follow what happened almost day for day! In prehistory we are often just making educated guesses! BIG difference!
