General History - Political Corruption?

Expert: Hank Hokamp - 10/30/2009

Question
Hi There..

I was just wondering how corrupt government back in the 1700,s were addressed. If politicians Ie.congressmen/senators/lawmakers/etc..what were the repercussions if they were found guilty? Were they hung/shot?

I also wanted to ask how corruption within the Greek/Roman government/Empire was addressed? If a Senator was corrupt, what did they do to him?

Matthew

Answer

Politicians, Matthew, were punished just like the common man:

    1. Trends in most of the world have long been to move to less painful, or more humane, executions. France developed the guillotine for this reason in the final years of the 18th century while Britain banned drawing and quartering in the early 18th century. Hanging by turning the victim off a ladder or by kicking a stool or a bucket, which causes death by suffocation, was replaced by "hanging" where the subject is dropped a longer distance to dislocate the neck and sever the spinal cord.

    2. The Roman Empire declined based upon the same factors that had caused it to flourish. It fell because the social, economic, political, military, and religion strengths were no longer viable. The Roman Empire came gradually and fell gradually.

That's it from here, Matthew. HAPPY HALLOWEEN, MY FRIEND!
