Explorers found there was a great deal of silver in the area. In the 1500's, traders collected silver which they took up river to Peru to trade. The down river area became known as "Argentina" which means "Land of Silver" ("Argentum" is the latin word for silver). The name stuck when the area was formed into a colony and later a country.
