I am currently reading James Michener's book "Alaska."  In the chapter about Nome, there is a character named Matthew Murphy who rides his bicycle from Dawson to Nome.  The character is fictional but Michener does say that an actual bicycle ride took place during this time.

Yes this is true. Max Hirschberg was my great uncle. He did ride a bicycle down the Yukon River as stated in the article. I have the original newspaper article of the event.

Matt Murphy was a fictional character in James Michener's Alaska.  His ride was based on an actual ride.

The Matthew Murphy story is fiction from James A Michener's novel Alaska. However, the story is based on the true story of Max Hirschberg (maybe others) who did a similar ride at that time.

James Michener's character, Matthew Murphy, was probably based on this story.
