General Networking/Lan/Wan - invalid ip

Expert: Benedict Brand-Cotti - 3/22/2008

Question
Hi Benedict, I know this is a very common problem, I've had it myself but I just can't remember how it was fixed. My friend has a lap top and is trying to connect to here wireless broadband at home but every time she tries to connect it says limited or no connectivity and when she tries to sign in to MSN is says invalid ip address. I hope this isn't a waste of your time, Thanks David

Answer
Hi David,

The problem is likely to be due to a DHCP address being allocated on another network (At work) for example. I sometimes have the same trouble as I work in two offices.

The easy fix is to open network connections and right click the connection and click repair.

In the long term, assuming your friend has a wireless router, configure the router to reserve ip addresses for specific MAC addresses. This is an excellent security measure too.

If this doesn't fix the problem let me know?

Regards,

Ben
