QUESTION: hi I have a small LAN to set up which consists of a server connected to a router connected to two switches which have 5 clients each I need to sub net this network but although I understand the switches and clients have to be on two separate subnets but what about the rest of the kit does my server and router have to be on the same subnet or separate ones? (This network is completely stand alone and does not need to connect to the net so ill be using 192.168.10.0 addresses)
ANSWER: Hi Terence,
If you look at your interfaces rather than your devices.
Connected interfaces must be on the same subnet to communicate. So...
The Router Port connected to the Server must be on the same subnet
The clients must be on the same subnet as their particular switch.
The each switch must have a connection to the router and that connection must have the same subnet at both ends.
If connectivity between the clients on different switches is required you will need to configure the router to forward traffic between the subnets.
I hope this makes sense. If you have further questions let me know?
Regards
Ben

QUESTION: hi sorry to bother you agein but is this right
attached is a diagram of my network woulr the subnets be-
1, between server and router
2 router and left hand and clients l1-5
3 router and right hand and clients r1-5
similer to the colours
Answer Terence,
No bother, I'm glad to help.
That looks good to me mate. You'll then need to route Red subnet to Blue Subnet and vice versa to achieve connectivity between red and blue clients. You'll also need to route traffic to and from the server.
