General Networking/Lan/Wan - Wireless Network Issue

Expert: Scottgem - 10/12/2009

Question
I have a roommate who constantly downloads porn from bit torrent so much and so frequently it completely clogs the network and nobody else is able to connect while he is on.  If we close bit torrent on his pc everything is fine or if he isn't on it's fine so that is clearly the issue and he will not stop from us just asking him to stop using bit torrent.  I've tried just going into the program itself and throttling his upload and download limits but he just changes them back is there any way to throttle his data usage through the network settings or to block P2P sharing all together?

Answer
Depends on your router. Some routers allow such restrictions. You may also try limiting his access to very late at night. Or, tell him you will disconnect him from the router. Internet access is a privilege not a right. the person who pays for the Internet account can dictate who can use it.

There is also the issue, that if he is downloading copyrighted material or illegal porn, then that could get the account owner in trouble.

Hope this helps
