General Networking/Lan/Wan - ethernet driver not working

Question
Hello, I have the 3c905b-tx network card and I'm running Windows ME (not by choice lol) I went to 3com's website and downloaded the right drivers and put them on my computer and it still won't find the internet. Am I doing anything wrong or is this a common problem with Windows ME maybe? Thanks for any help, Jim.

Answer
Hi Jim,

Sorry, but Windows ME is a terrible OS and driver problems are very common.  However, the 3Con cards are extremely common and should work even on ME.

I suggest trying a complete uninstall.  Remove the card through Control Panel, shut down, and physically remove the adapter card.  Reboot without the card.  Shut down and reinstall the card and reboot.  Windows should detect it and should ask whether to install default drivers or not; at that point, specify the driver that you downloaded online.

If that doesn't fix it, then the card may be faulty (test it in another computer to be sure), or may just be ME incompatible.  In either case, try a different model or brand of card.

Good luck, and I hope this helps,

Ralph
