General Networking/Lan/Wan - wireless internet suggestions

Expert: Ralph Becker - 11/1/2009

Question
i currently have my PS3 upstairs one room away from my wireless g route. PS3 only supports wireless b/g. i actually have it connected wired though for better connection. im moving into the basement tomorrow. the modem is staying upstairs 2 floors above almost a direct str8 shot upward from where ill have my ps3. my question is... without running a long wire outside my house which would be better, buying a wireless N router for upstairs and a wireless N acces point for downstairs and directly wiring my ps3 or a wirelss g access point or just hooking the ps3 up wirelessy and not buying anything? i got a better connection wired than wireless being only one room away so im afraid i will not be happy unless i run a really long wire outside which i just dont want to do.... will any of my solutions work? if you have a better one i will be greatly appreciative. thanks billy

Answer
Hi William and thanks for your question.

You will be the best network performance if you go with a wired connection.  If performance is a top goal, then you should bite the bullet and run cable.  Hint: always run more than 1 cable; 2 is better, 4 is great.  Wire is relatively cheap, and you never know when a cable will fail or you will need another.  Also, there may be a way to fish cables through your walls.  If you know someone who has experience with running alarm wires or electrical wires, ask them for their thoughts.

Wireless N is not going to help you much if at all.  Your PS3 is B/G only, and only devices that support N will gain from the upgrade.  You would need not just a router and/or access points, but also wireless LAN adapters for your computers that use wireless.

Your suggestion to use an access point will also not help you.  What may help you is a wireless bridge setup.  However, if your wireless signal is already weak, a bridge will also be weak if you locate the bridge anywhere near the PS3.

One suggestion is to try relocating your current wireless router.  Sometimes a move of just a few feet can make a huge difference in the signal strength.  This is because there may just happen to be something in the way, like an appliance or power cable, that's blocking the signal.  You can try attaching a longer ethernet cable to the router and have someone monitor the signal strength on the PS3 as you move the router around.

Good luck, and I hope this helps.

Ralph
