Question Hello Scott
Well, I took your advice and did not give up, but I am now definitely going to do so......
I can actually install any printer, except the one that I want! My one (HP psc1355 all-in-one) does not show up on the list!
Even if I were to find the right one on the list (and isn't it strange that mine is not listed?), the problem would still exist because it cannot see the printer that is sitting on the desk next to it! I have actually managed to install a couple from the list, just to practice, and it does install. It is just that it does not work with my CD Rom and I do not see my actual printer listed.
I have used the correct IP address.
Surely, you must agree, that I am unable to do this?
Thank you! Sorry for taking up your time.

Hi Scott
Thanks for the info.
Did all that. I chose the IP address and put it in the right box. It didn't work, and then when I tried to do it again, it said that I was unable to choose that port again, as it already had one with that name. So now, I am giving up.
When I say that I have the disk and insert it into the disk drive, the laptop just acts like there is nothing there. I know it isn't damaged as I used it to re-install the software on my PC just this morning, due to thinking that there was a problem with the old installation. There clearly wasn't.
I have tried everything, and now I am going to accept defeat.
Thanks for your help, anyway.

Hi Scott
Thank you for your very quick response.
I should have said that the laptop is linked to the PC using the wireless device which is built into the laptop. I have, in addition, a Netscape wireless router which links my other computer upstairs to my PC (downstairs).
Should I have a wireless device connected directly to the printer? I had assumed that the fact that the laptop is linked to the PC via a wirelss connection (built into the laptop), that this would suffice.
I have enabled sharing, but I do not know what you mean as "designate the printer as a shared resource". Is that not just ticking the 'Share this Printer' box?
Also, if I give the laptop a little help along the way, as you suggest, do I need to find a cable to link printer to laptop? This may seem like a dumb question to you, so apologies. Where can I get the IP address of my PC?
Sorry to have so many queries.
Thanks again

Hello!
I have linked my laptop to my PC to enable me to use my broadband connection. This works well. The laptop is wireless (new Toshiba) and the printer is a HP. The printer is linked to the PC and works well.
The problem is that the laptop wizard cannot see the printer when I try to install it on the laptop. I have gone into "Exceptions" on the windows firewall to exclude the printer. I have enabled "Sharing" on the printer.
I cannot see what else I can do to get this laptop to find the printer. All it finds is "Microsoft Windows Network" whatever that might be!
Help!

You don't say how you linked them, but I assume from your post that its thru a wireless router. Besides enabling sharing, you have to designated the printer as a shared resource. This will be indicated by a little hand under the printer icon.
If the printer doesn't show up on the list of networked printers, then you have to kind of fudge it. Install the printer on the laptop as a local printer. When it asks you to choose a port, instead of choosing LPT1:, use the Add a Port option and add a TCP/IP port using the IP address of the PC the printer is connected to.

Everything you have setup sounds correct. One of the ways of sharing a printer is exactly what you you've done. You shouldn't need to do anything more. However, with a peer to peer network, I've found that the printer doesn't always appear as a network share. Not sure why. I've had success with the workaround I suggested.
You do not need to hook the printer to the laptop to install it. You can install a printer that is not connected to the PC, you just need to install the drivers.
To find your IP, go to Start>Run and type cmd. At the command prompt type IPCONFIG.

Don't give up. The reason the disk didn't work is because it was looking for the printer being connected to your PC. instead of using the disk, see if the printer is listed and select it from the list. You can delete the port or just select it.
If this still doesn't work, go to hp.com and use the Support area to see if there are other instructions. If not, you can send them an e-mail and they will respond within 24 hours.

Answer No its not surprising that the 1355 is not listed. It came out after Win XP so may not have been included. Did you install SP2 for XP? It might be listed there. I checked on my office machine which has SP1 and the list has only older printers. So, to install the software you will probably need to temporarily attach the printer to the laptop.
I still think you should contact HP. Their tech support is very good and they should give you step by step instructions. If you go here:
