Question Hi, I have recently purchased an adsl wifi-modem-router to replace a basic adsl router which I have been using for several years, (specifically a Zyxel 660HW to replace a Zyxel 630). The new device is unable to establish a connection with my ISP when it is connected to the adsl (telephone) cable which was used by the old modem but it works fine when connected by the cable which was supplied with it. Unfortunately, I will not be able to use the supplied cable as it is too short to reach the location where I want to install it. Have you any idea why the new device cannot connect whereas the old one can when used with the same cable?
Answer Hi Robert, and thanks for your question.
Most likely, and obviously, the new device has a different connector than the old device. I would guess that the old device has a 10Mb/s ethernet interface, and the new device has a 100 or 10/100Mb/s interface. It also may be possible that the new device simply requires a different cable - straight through as opposed to cross-over, or vice versa.
Have a look at the cable that works with the new device. Carefully note the colors of the individual wires in the connectors at each end of the cable. Most likely, it is a "straight-through" cable where the wire colors at each end of the cable are in the same order. In that case, all you need to do is buy a replacement cable of the same type that's longer. eBay is a good online source for inexpensive cables.
