Question Hello,
I recently had to renew my IP Address with my ISP and now the other computers on mynetwork cannot connect to the internet. I am running windows XP on all of these computers and I have tried turning off the DHCP on my router and manually assigning new IP addresses to the computers on my network by using a subnet calculator but the other computers will still not connect to the internet. Please help me find a solution to this problem.
Answer Hi Dan,
When you say you changed IP, do you pay for a static IP address with your ISP?
In any case, if you have a router, the only thing that should change is your public IP address. If however they changed the DNS (Domain Name Servers) information, then what might be happenning is that all the computers simply need to "renew" the information. The reason it would not have renewed is that it could be set to renew in 8 days or 90 days, so what happened is that they kept the same internal IP address but they are missing the DNS information to access web sites.
You should make sure that all computers are set to accept automatically an IP adress, you do that by right clicking on My Network Places go to properties, then right click on your local area connection, then go to properties again. From there click on TCP/IP...then click on properties again. Make sure that the green dots are both set to "obtain an IP address..." and "Obtain DNS server..." click on OK, OK and close the remaining window. Do that on all computers.
From a command prompt type ipconfig /release this should put all addresses to 0.0.0.0 then type ipconfig /renew, this should renew all the information about the ISP to your computers.
If you are having more trouble, post a follow up to this question and let me know what type of provider you have, cable or DSL, type of router and type of setup you have and what error messages you are getting , if any.
Meanwhile I hope this helps anf thank you for writing.
