Subject: licenses/permits need for home based online retail business Chicago

Question
I am planning to start a home-based online retail business selling apparell and accessories.  I am wondering what type of licenses/permits I need as a resident of the City of Chicago.  Will I only need a Home Based Business License, or will I need a retail license in addition to this?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Answer
Lauren,  You will likely need a generic City of Chicago Business license, it costs $250 for two years. You also will need to register with the State of Illinois to submit sales tax on any sales that you make in the State. You are not required to collect or charge sales taxes for shipments outside the state at this time. There may be other requirements but the City of Chicago has a good web site with lots of advice, and you would be best to call them on the phone and talk to one of the business consultants.  Your accountant can also tell you of any state tax requirements.
