Question I recently purchased a stock with an Ex Date of Sept 30.
I purchased on Sept 26 and it appeared in my portfolio immediately.
However I did not receive the Dividend because thebroker said it was not "registered" in time.
What is the difference in registration and ownership for ex date requirement? How long before an Ex Date must I buy a stock to qualify for dividend?
Answer Sept 26 was a friday ...stock purchases take 3 business days to settle ....... Its my opinion that sat and sun did not count as business days ......This means your position settled on oct 1 .... ie you were not registered by 29 sept ...to be paid on 30 sept..... my question to you is whether you used a real broker like charles schwab ..... or were you using a deep discounter who may have cleared your trade late ..... if you dont use Charles Schwab...like I do.... you may want to confirm my opinion with 1 of their broker supervisors...it may be time for you to change brokers... if the trade was cleared late you may have a SEC complaint..... good luck.
