General Stock Investment Strategies - Looking for Delta stock

Expert: Tad Borek - 5/26/2009

Question
Hi, Thank you in advance for this question. My Mother who is 92
years old and having difficultly remembering things, has said
in the past, she owned Delta stock. Looking through her papers
I could not find it.Is there a way to check this out and find
out if she does.  Thank you,Dave

Answer
Dave, that's a tough one to track down. My best suggestion is to check with the unclaimed-property authority in the state where your mother lives. If there was a brokerage account that was abandoned, it should have ended up there. You can do online searches by starting here:

Another possible lead is looking at copies of old tax returns, if you can find any. If the stock was held through a brokerage firm, and especially if there were other investments as well, you should see some dividends or interest reported on Schedule B of the federal income tax return - the brokerage firm will be listed by name as the payer. That could lead you an account that you aren't aware of.

I wouldn't spend much time on this though...Delta has gone through bankruptcy and the shares were probably declared worthless at that point. It is possible that some dividends or stock distributions were paid before that, so there may still be something of value to claim.
