General Surgery - gallbladder surgery and my period

Expert: Dawn Caceres - 3/7/2008

Question
I'm having my gallbladder removed next week and I'm afraid i will be on my monthly cycle will that effect my surgery in anyway please?

Answer
Dear Chasidy,

It is not unusual for us women to have our menses and then be scheduled for surgery. You mustn't wear any tampons for the surgical day. Come prepared for surgery wearing a pad and carry an extra one just in case.

Make sure to mention that you are menstruating to the nurse that takes care of you for surgery. She'll make sure to fill you in and have you comfortable for surgery. Nothing else will change regarding the procedure/surgery.

If you have any further questions or concerns please feel free to contact me again...

Good luck!
