General Surgery - Lap Band Surgery and menstral cycle

Expert: Dawn Caceres - 6/2/2008

Question
I am scheduled to have Lap band surgery in a week and I'm afraid that I will get my menstrual cycle right before the scheduled surgery.  Would that affect my surgery in any way? Will I have to re-schedule?

Answer
Dear Raiza,

It is not unusual for women to have their menses for surgery. What is important is that you do not wear a tampon. You should wear a pad and bring an extra one. You must also not forget to tell your surgical nurses that you have your menses when you are giving your information about your history to them.

You will not have to reschedule your surgery. Although it is uncomfortable to us to have our menses when we are going into surgery it isn't a problem for the actual surgery.

I hope this helps...
