Hi, I need your help, my mom who is her late 80's was told by her doctor that she will need Hernia surgery. The Hernia is sticking out of her intestine and the doctor say she needs this taken care of, it may cause problems in the future. I'm trying to figure out
which would be the best direction surgically to go, open or Laparoscopic because of her age. Also, I live on Long Island, NY and I'm having difficulty in finding a Laparoscopic Surgeon that has been performing this procedure for any length of time.

Can you please help, I don't want to wait to long -

thanks again

Dear Ken,

Laparoscopic hernia surgery is a newer type of repair than the open procedure. It is not practiced by all surgeons, and I personally do not think it is the best way to repair the hernia. Working in the Department of Surgery, and assisting in many hernia surgeries, I would concentrate more on the experience of the surgeon rather than the technique. I hope this helps.
