General Surgery/mirena iud surgical removal

I went to my obgyn to have my mirena iud removed after its insertion 5 years ago. She was not able to find the strings or get it out on the first appointment. I had to make a second appointment and wait a month to see her. They performed a sonogram to verify that it was still there, which it was. It has migrated up in the uterus and they were still not able to get it out, even after prescribing misoprostol to help her get it out. My insurance will not cover it because it is considered an elective procedure. My obgyn will not schedule the surgery until I am able to pay the full amount up front. I have called several other obgyn offices looking for a doctor/hospital that will work with me on a payment plan because I can not afford to pay for the surgery up front. Meanwhile this iud is causing severe abdominal pain and headaches. What else can I do to get this thing out? Help!

Dear Heather,

Your gynecologist needs to do a Peer-to-Peer review with the insurance company's medical professional. This is not an elective procedure, this can turn into a medical emergency. Your gynecologist needs to advocate for you. Call the office and demand that they do what is necessary to properly manage your care. Their answer to you, is unacceptable. Please get back to me if you still find yourself without any answers.
