General Surgery/swelling and weight gain after hysterectomy

I had a hysterectomy 2 months ago due to fibroids.  Everything was removed but my ovaries.  I am a single mother and probably have been doing a bit more than I should. I am 38 years old and in good general health otherwise.  Since the surgery I have gained about 7 pounds and am very frustrated.  I am eating less than before the surgery.  I am less active, but still do not sit around the house.  I work from home and am moving most of the day with very little time to sit down.  It is just very discouraging because I did try my normal power walk last week and got into about 20 minutes and started having pain so I had to quit. My stomach does still seem swollen and is worse at some time than others.  Jeans are tight in the tummy and maybe a bit more in the legs, but I do notice if I wear jeans within about 5 hours they seem to have gotten tighter. My general question is does the actual swelling of my stomach from the surgery area contribute to any of this weight gain and how long does this tend to last.  I didn't think the recovery would be this bad.  I thought I would be a little more normal by now.

Dear Heather,

Surgery would not cause a 7 pound weight gain in 2 months. This is either from expending less calories than you are taking in, fluid retention, or a sluggish thyroid. My recommendation is to make an appointment with you primary care provider for blood work.
