Question
What is a "seroma", how does it develop, & how long is the usual time for it to heal?  I'm a 54 yr old female-5'2" & 210 lbs. I have metabolic syndrome, including type 2 diabetes managed by glucophage alone. Also have MS, depression, & hypothyroidism--all managed by meds. Had a total hysterectomy for Stage 1 uterine cancer & told of my umbilical hernia. Recenly started to bulge so had an open hernia repair w/mesh implant--incision healed quickly; but had drainage of a pale pink fluid (not blood) for about a month. Surge an called it a seroma & told me to pack umbilicus & cover. Got curious after last visit--leading to ?

Answer
Dear Cat,

A seroma is a pooling of fluid which occurs sometimes after surgery. It usually gets reabsorbed by the body. Sometimes it needs to be drained, but this is not the usual course of action.

Follow up with your surgeon for anything you find to be abnormal in nature.
