Question Hi,
I underwent surgery for a hernia/gilmore groin (mesh procedure) nearly 11 weeks ago.I felt much better after 9 weeks and returned to training. The pain has since returned around the incision area and I have had to stop training again. Is there a danger I could have damaged the mesh etc? What is normal recovery time for this surgery?
Answer Hello Owen,
Mesh is a foreign body that is introduced into the defect. The body reacts to the foreign body by recruiting fibroblasts which produce intense fibrosis around the mesh which in turn strengthens the area. In this process of fibrosis, nerves can be entrapped leading to pain.
You know that you have damaged the mesh when there is a recurrence of hernia on the same site; otherwise, it's quite common to experience pain following the hernia repair which might take a few months' time to resolve completely.
