Question
Hi Ted,

How are you today? It's very hot here in the Philippines today.

Just wondering about the sentence patterns for these examples.

She takes a bath is STVO
What about
She's taking a bath? is bath still an object?
or will it become an SIV pattern?

What about in passive sentences.
A bath was taken by her. will that be an STVO ir an SIV?

Thank you very much.

Bernard

Dear Bernard:

**** I would call our weather unseasonably warm.  It's spring, but we are
having a summer heat wave.

She's taking a bath? is bath still an object?
or will it become an SIV pattern?

*** This is also STVO.  Subject = she; Verb phrase = is taking; bath = noun as direct object of "is taking."  The progressive form verb [is taking] is used to indicate that the bath is happening right now.

What about in passive sentences.
A bath was taken by her. will that be an STVO ir an SIV?

*** There is great disagreement about parsing sentences whose verbs are in the passive voice.  I agree with those who say this:  Subject = bath; intransitive verb phrase = was taken; prepositional phrase = by her.

NOTE:  Other grammarians would revert this sentence to the active voice.  I don't like that option.
