General Writing and Grammar Help/Comma usage


Should there be a comma in either of these sentences.
"In May Mrs. Johnson went to the Grand Canyon."
"She is the only female bilingual officer on the force."


Try these:

In May, Mrs. Johnson went to the Grand Canyon.

She is the only female, bilingual officer on the force.

Note: The comma in #1 is optional since the rule says when a sentence begins with a long (four or five words) prepositional phrase, it should be set off by a comma.
