Question
Hi Ted,

Can you please tell me which of the following is correct:

The men wear their hats.

The men wear their hat.

I am trying to describe a group of men who are each wearing one hat.

Thank you

Sincerely,

Rich

Answer
Dear Rich:

The men wear their hats.

The men wear their hat.

I am trying to describe a group of men who are each wearing one hat.

*** "The men wear their hats" is the correct choice.  If you use the singular form "hat," it sounds like they share a communal hat.
